The present sonata, which is already exceptionally charming thanks to its scoring, was most likely written in Darmstadt in 1713; the 25-year-old Johann Friedrich Fasch was sojourning in the southern Hessian residence city that year. After working in Leipzig as director of a Collegium musicum which he had founded, he decided to study composition with Johann Christoph Graupner. Our edition is based on a collective manuscript containing altogether nine sonatas by Fasch which is housed in the Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek. Editorial additions are marked, articulations and ornaments sparingly supplemented. We have now added a harpsichord part in order to allow one of the historically customary performance forms in the concert hall.
