Matthias Weckmann was a scholar of Heinrich Schutz and transferred his heritage to Northern Germany. Thus Weckmann set the foundation for Dieterich Buxtehude. His eight Sonatas for four parts (violin, oboe, trombone, bassoon (or dulcian) and Basso Continuo are featured by a tight counterpoint and harmonic peculiarities.
