On raconte que le compositeur américain Leroy Anderson aurait écrit ce noël léger et pétillant au cours d’une vague de chaleur en juillet 1948. Mitchell Parish écrit le texte en 1950. Depuis, de nombreux artistes tels que les Carpenters, Ella Fitzgerald et Diana Ross ont interprété et enregistré cette chanson. Cet arrangement pour ensemble instrumentation variable (batterie ad lib.) reste fidèle la version originale.
