Scylla and Charybdis are sea monsters from Greek mythology that lived in the Strait of Messina, each occupying one side of the strait. Scylla had six heads with a triple row of teeth in each mouth and ate anyone who came near her. Charybdis sucked in the sea water three times a day, then expelled it again with a roar. Ships caught in the maelstrom were doomed. In the Odyssey by the Greek poet Homer, Odysseus lost 6 companions while passing through the strait. This part of the adventure was translated into music.
