The cycle Seven Compositions for Piano op. 14 is the second title appearing within the Complete Critical Edition of Works by Miloslav Kabelac (1908-1979), a distinguished Czech composer known for his use of rare compositional methods (work with his own modes) as well as uncommon source of inspiration (non-European music cultures, plainchant). The present critical edition of these pieces stemming from the years 1944-46 is based on the composer's autograph, currently filed in the Czech Museum of Music in Prague. Despite the fact that the pieces are rather small-scale, 3-to-4-page compositions, they should not be thought of as being undemanding pieces contributing to the teaching repertoire. This is best evidenced during Kabelac's lifetime, e.g. an outstanding pianist Pavel Stepan had these pieces in his fixed repertoire as does today Daniel Wiesner, the first pianist to record the whole cycle in 2000.
