Whitney Prince says, "In many indigenous cultures, shamans are believed to act as intermediaries between the natural and supernatural worlds, using magico-religious practices to cure illness, foretell the future and control spiritual forces. Shaman: Concerto for Clarinet and Percussion Ensemble depicts a brief shamanistic journey. After an opening display of wizardry, the shaman travels to the spirit world, engages a healing spirit and returns to the human world joyously transformed. The work is dedicated to Dr. Robert Spring, a musical shaman of sorts, in celebration of his 25 years of service to Arizona State University.".
