Serenade auf dem Meer (Serenade on the Sea)
Purposeful and determined, and supported and encouraged from all sides, Margarete Schweikert prepared herself for life as an artist. For her 21st birthday, she received, instead of a dowry, a valuable violin as a present from her parents. In 1923, Margarete got married, in 1924 she gave birth to her daughter. She confined her concerts to Karlsruhe and the surrounding area. In 1933, the year that the National Socialists seized power, Margarete Schweikert decided to return to work. However, she discovered that as a dual earner she was not eligible for a work permit. As such, she had to content herself with playing at social gatherings and musical soirees organised by the National Socialist Women's League - hardly the most challenging of employments for a creative spirit such as hers. Following the end of the war, Schweikert began teaching again and wrote several more lieder, some of which were based on the poetry of Martha Kropp.
Once the Association of Women Artists and Art Friends (GEDOK) re-established in Karlsruhe in 1950 Margarete Schweikert became Head of Music, and in 1955 became the Chairwoman. She died in her home town on 13 March, 1957.
