Im Fruhling (In Spring)

Reminiscence of lost love is the theme of this song, which depicts a man sat on a hillside overlooking the valley where he spent time with a former lover. The title is both a metaphor for first love, and the season in which the narrative takes place. Each verse describes a different mood experienced by the song’s main character as he reflects upon his experience:

1.   The memory of happiness

2.   The difference between past and present

3.   Resignation to a future without the love lost

4.   The joy of resurrecting lost happiness in song

The song is in the key of G major apart from the third verse, which modulates to the tonic minor in order to support the change of mood in the lyrics, before returning to the major as the remembered happiness is reborn.

This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.
