This piece for solo steel-string guitar was inspired in part by its namesake, a formation of sandstone concretions that I found many years ago on the coast of Cape Breton Island. Their usual name in geological circles is "cannonball", but they always struck as much more of a jewel than a bit of weaponry. Musically, the piece also takes as a jumping off point "Slat Key Soquel Rag", an instrumental work by Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers. It has only a faint resemblance, but I was noodling around with that piece when this one announced itself to me. The version notated here calls for a capo on the 4th fret, and that's how I have usually played it, but I also like the way it sounds with a 2nd-fret capo, instead.
