The inspiration comes from the idea that music should not just be something that we play, but something that is itself playful. It is my hope that Sandbox can be playful and fun for both of the performers and the audience.
This piece is written from the perspective of a toy box, watching a child play for the first time. The primary motive gets turned upside down, backwards, restated in new keys, and comes in early as the kid gets more and more carried away. After the climax, the child is convinced to calm down and go to bed. This should be pretty straightforward, but the important part is that you have fun, and play with this in the same way the child might.
