Colin Kirkpatrick’s Sanctus for violin and piano is a lyrical, elegiac melody that reflects the spirit of a bygone age. The musical language is tonal but slightly chromatic and has proved a popular item at recitals where it’s been played. The piano shares some of the melodic material with the violin and the music evokes peace and tranquility; there’s a brief yet passionate passage near the middle of the piece before the music returns to the quite place where it began. The highest note in the violin part is the A just above the treble staff (A5). It’s estimated that the standard is about ABRSM Grade 5. This work would make an excellent addition to a violin recital.
