Enttäuscht, dass er mit seinen musikalischen Ambitionen in der Metropole London nicht reüssieren konnte, zog sich der englische Komponist Edward Elgar in die Provinz zurück. Im Sommer des Jahres 1888 überraschte ihn seine Verlobte Caroline Alice Roberts mit einem selbst verfassten Gedicht Love’s Grace. Elgar revanchierte sich mit einem Liebesgruß für Klavier. Dem Musikverleger Schott angeboten, sollte das Kleinod 1889 das erste veröffentlichte Werk von Edward Elgar werden. Durchbruch sollte allerdings erst mit dem französisierten Titel Salut d’amour gelingen. Mittlerweile ist die Miniatur zu einem Klassik-Hit geworden und dürfte auch in der Klaviertrio-Fassung verzaubern.
