Royal Flush Blues is a grade 3+ level chart for Jazz Ensemble suited for High School and College Bands. The name comes from the simple allusion to having the best hand in poker 10 through Ace in one suit. In this chart the standard F-Blues is the suit and the five soloists represent the royalty of the deck. The piece gives five soloists the opportunity to improvise and show their stuff. This is an ideal concert or festival piece and a great training chart for improvisation. The lead alto player, or anyone who doubles on flute can play the alto solo at letter C. The bass solo at letter F is intentionally scored very sparsely for the first 12 blues to allow the texture to come through. It is followed by a surprise entrance of the whole band at G and is accompanied with stabs from all sections. The guitar can substitute for the piano solo at letter H if so desired. The shout and modulation to Ab after the piano solo at letter I is written to give a big "fat back" emphasis beats on 2 and 4. The idea of this piece is to generate a strong driving swing feel and for the players to have fun. Enjoy!

Instrumentation: 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, Baritone Saxophone, 4 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Bass Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums.
