“Tien Hey Hey” (Dark Day) is one of the most popular folk tunes in Ming-Nan speaking community in Taiwan. It describes a couple find a loach when plowing in the farm during a raining day. When they prepare to cook it, they fight over whether to season it with salt or sweeten it up but accidentally breaking the cooking pot. The song of this witty folklore became the basic materials as well as the inspiration for the newly composed “Rain Noir Noir” to depict the scene of rain drops, plowing, and the fight.
Set for one Harp, one flute, and one cello, the work was composed for the harpist Liya Huang, the principal harpist of China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, and is included in her first recording album “Harpy Lab, A Collection of Harp Compositions by Contemporary Taiwanese Composers,” commercially released in March 2018.
