Composed by Rodney Money. Score only. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11561).
A high energy percussion ensemble piece worthy of the feisty little birds it was inspired by. The composer states that conures inspire the light, colorful mood of the piece, while the quakers provide the reason why he wrote the composition for nine percussionists.
Quakers & Conures was inspired by these mischievous, intelligent, feisty little clowns from Mexico to South America. There are also species of conures in the Caribbean Islands. The Aratinga genus of conures is Latin for 'little macaw.' The macaws have been described as the majestic rulers of the parrot kingdom, but the amazons would argue with that comment. Being the majestic little macaws that they are, there is a little fanfare motive played by the xylophone throughout the piece that represents them. The United States had a conure, the Carolina Conure, before they became extinct in the twentieth century. It was not the pet trade that caused this travesty, but the heartless farmers who shot them by the thousands. Education is the key to preventing present-day conures from suffering the same fate of the Carolina Conure. The conures inspire the light, colorful mood of the piece, while the quakers provide the reason why I wrote the composition for nine percussionists. I had the pleasure of owning a quaker named Sydney before I came to college. Out of my birds, he was the best talker. Sydney thought he was the largest bird in the house, but I had to rescue him every time he ventured too close to Louie, my Greater Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. I did not want my thirteen-inch, fluorescent green bird to lose his head. Sydney did get along with my Orange-winged Amazon, George. They were the best of friends. Sydney liked to splash George and me from his water dish every chance he got. He was quite a character, spending more time on his back than on his feet. Without Sydney, Quakers & Conures would not have the energy and excitement that the composition calls for. Sydney is now living with a twelve-year-old boy and his family in Winston-Salem, NC. Quakers & Conures is dedicated to Sydney, the Carolina Conure, and all the quakers and conures of the world.
