George Vance has produced a new approach to the teaching of the double bass which has resulted in an excellent method for both the young and adult beginner and the advanced player. His design of introducing primarily the intervals of octaves, fifths and fourths is a logical step to ready the student for the smaller intervals which are not as easy to hear accurately. His system is a superb preparation for the aspiring student to pursue other methods of higher technique, such as that of Francois Rabbath.

A Significant Work
(Where I'm coming from: professional wind musician of many years standing, I've messed around with bass from time to time, mainly jazz pizz style, but now interested in learning properly - with a bow!)This is certainly different from any other bass method I've encountered & I like the alternative approach. For me it complements what I've done already but I don't have enough experience on bass to judge how suitable it would be for beginners (even though I'm almost one myself). I shall certainly explore the later volumes of this series.

The Gold Standard for teaching bass
This book is the gold standard for teaching a beginner to learn how to play bass. With this volume the entire geography of the fingerboard is introduced to the student in an easily attainable method. In subsequent volumes, more advance left and right hand techniques are explored ending with a concerto movement from the standard repertoire for bass. Thoughtful, thorough, and pushes the student to their maximum potential.

Outstanding!
George Vance left us his legacy in his method books. By combining the simplified Rabbath fingering system with the educational principals of Suzuki this book and the subsequent volumes teach the novice bassist a way to play the instrument in a manner that is fun, liberating and fearless. The results my students have had with these books has been phenomenal. It is the new way to learn the bass.
