This piece was composed as the theme music for the '20th Century in Moving Images' (1995-1996), a documentary series by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the invention of motion picture. When this melody first came to my mind, I thought of "humans" themselves, who had experiences dramatic changes throughout the 20th century. We have foolishly repeated the cycle of wars and yet built up splendid and beautiful civilization, in other words created history. I wanted to express the magnificent ideal of "history of humans" in the music. The title derives from Nazi Germany's strategy, although never actually carried out, intending to destry Paris during World War II.
