The Holly and the Ivy is one of the oldest and most popular of all English Christmas carols. The text refers to Mary and Jesus, but equally to the pre-Christian tradition of celebrating the winter solstice. The melody is thought to originate in 11th Century France. Countless stars, including Charlie Byrd, Petula Clark and Annie Lennox have been inspired to record their own interpretations - just as Franco Cesarini has done with this wonderful arrangement for wind orchestra.
The Holly and the Ivy is een van de oudste en tevens populairste Engelse kerstliederen. De tekst gaat zowel over Maria en Jezus als ook over de voorchristelijke traditie van de aanbidding van de zonnewende. De melodie vindtzijn oorsprong waarschijnlijk in het Frankrijk van de elfde eeuw. Talrijke artiesten lieten zich tot een eigen versie inspireren. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan Charlie Byrd, Petula Clark en Annie Lennox. Franco Cesarini maakte er een prachtigeversie van voor blaasorkest.

Der Text handelt sowohl von Maria und Jesus als auch von der vorchristlichen Tradition der Wintersonnwendfeier. Die Melodie stammt vermutlich aus Frankreich aus dem 11. Jahrhundert. Les origines de chant traditionnel, The Holly and the Ivy (Le houx et le lierre), pourraient remonter plus de 1000 ans. Ce chant animait alors les soirées hivernales l’approche de Noël, car les paroles mentionnent la robustesse du houx et du lierre face la froideur de l’hiver, ainsi que l’espoir de voir venir des jours plus chaleureux.
