In de jaren zeventig creëerden Kenneth Gamble en Leon Huff de Philly Sound (Sound of Philadelphia), die de weg vrijmaakte voor de latere opkomst van de disco. Het geheim van dit succesvolle duo lag in de enigszins jazzy stijl vancomponeren en een perfect samengaan van strijk- en koperinstrumenten. Soul Train was het muzikale thema van een tv-programma, dat een groot succes bleek. Gamble & Huff besloten daarop om een single te produceren met de titelT.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia), een nummer dat wereldwijd de hitparades bestormde.
