New Ways was written for the dedication of the new high-speed train line in Austria. The 'New Ways' of the title is a comparison between a journey in an ultramodern train with that of a ride in an old steam locomotive. The two opposites are presented in two contrasting movements: on the one hand, the shunting of wagons, the whistle of the engine and the leisurely journey; while on the other, the sheer speed, energy and absolute mobility. A fine musical contrast!

New Ways werd geschreven in opdracht van de Oostenrijkse spoorwegmaatschappij, ter gelegenheid van de ingebruikname van een nieuwe hogesnelheidslijn in het Inntal in Tirol. Het werk weerspiegelt de sfeer die heerst rondom een treinreis van vroeger en nu. In de twee afzonderlijke delen worden verleden en heden muzikaal tegenover elkaar geplaatst. De geluiden van bedrijvigheid, het rangeren van wagons en het fluitsignaal van een stoomlocomotief - klanken van vroeger - maken plaats voor eigentijdse geluiden van snelheid, energie en mobiliteit.

New Ways wurde für die Einweihung einer neuen Hochgeschwindigkeitsbahnlinie in Osterreich geschrieben - die im Titel genannten neuen Wege vergleichen eine Reise mit einem hochmodernen Zug mit einer Fahrt in alten Zügen mit Dampflokomotiven. In zwei Satzen werden die beiden Gegensatze prasentiert: auf der einen Seite das Rangieren der Waggons, das Signal der Lokomotive und die gemachliche Reise, auf der anderen Seite die pure Geschwindigkeit, Energie und absolute Mobilitat. Ein schoner musikalischer Kontrast!

New Ways commemore l'ouverture d'un nouveau troncon de la ligne ferroviaire a grande vitesse de la basse vallee de l'Inn, au Tyrol. Les nouveaux trains parcourent maintenant cette portion a plus de 220 km/h. La musique de New Ways reflete l'ambiance des voyages en train d'autrefois et ceux d'aujourd'hui. Le son des manoeuvres du siecle dernier fait place a des sons contemporains illustrant vitesse, energie et mobilite. La piece est divisee en deux parties, quelques secondes de silence entre les deux separant le passe du present, - un tableau musical des New Ways (Nouvelles directions). Joli contraste !
