By Chun-Chieh Yen, Jie-Min Yan, Shao-Chia Lu, and Taiwan Philharmonic Orchestra. By Qigang Chen. Classical. Listening CD. Published by Naxos (NX.8570614).
Qigang Chen was Olivier Messiaen's last and only student from 1984-88 and his music embodies what his French teacher called 'real inventiveness, very great talent and total assimilation of Chinese thinking with European musical concepts'. Er Huang, commissioned by Carnegie Hall, is based on a number of melodies from Peking operas, nostalgically recollected, whilst the unusual form of Enchantements oublies explores a journey into the essence of beauty. Un temps disparu features the erhu, a two-string Chinese fiddle, in music that expands traditional instrumentation and repertoire towards innovative approaches.
