The Norwegian pianist, Ingrid Andsnes played Beethoven's vaunted Diabelli Variations as the soundtrack in the play '33 Variations' that premiered in Oslo in 2014. Now in her CD solo debut, Andsnes revisits these powerful and demanding Variations with the addition of a cadenza written for her by the Norwegian composer, Lars Petter Hagen and gives a deeply musical interpretation of this notoriously demanding work that can be humbling for the requirements it makes of pianists. Andsnes is clearly up to the challenge of this work and makes a wonderfully nervy debut as a result.
