This prelude is very much influenced by the nocturnes of Chopin. There is a vocal quality to the melody, as though that of a tender aria, but this is more instrumental in nature. The broken chords of the left hand supply the steady rhythm upon which the melody is allowed to be freer and more expressive, providing many opportunities throughout the piece for wonderfully embellished lines and moments of soaring beauty.
