Composed by John Ross. Christian,Religious,Sacred. 6 pages. John Ross #981223. Published by John Ross (A0.1397950).When Richard of Chichester (1197-1253) was elected bishop in 1244 King Henry III refused to accept the appointment, favouring another candidate. The king even forbade anyone to house or feed Richard. However, Pope Innocent IV confirmed the appointment, and Richard became Bishop of Chichester in 1245. He was keen to restore order and reverence in the church and was known as an ascetic, displaying frugality and temperance throughout his life.
On his deathbed he is said to have recited the prayer for which he is now very well known, "Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ". These words became famous after their use in the song "Day by day" from Stephen Schwartz's musical "Godspell" (1971).
