Composed by David Neff. Sacred,Spiritual. Score. 5 pages. David Neff #4895145. Published by David Neff (A0.829039).

This organ voluntary references the tune "Steal Away to Jesus" in a series of variations which begin misterioso, hovering over a sustained low-F pedal point. The concluding con moto section adds a more assertive sound through the use of a light reed stop, alluding to the phrase "the trumpet sounds within-a my soul."
"Steal Away to Jesus" dates to before 1862, when a minister at a Choctaw Indian school heard Wallace Willis sing the song. Willis was an enslaved person working for a Choctaw freedman. The song was popularized by the Fisk Jubilee Singers in America and Britain during their tours of 1872 and 1873.
This voluntary lasts approximately four minutes, making it easily usable in church settings. The pedal point makes the piece accessible for organists who have developed good keyboard skills in their piano training, but who are still challenged by the pedal board.
