PANOPTIKUM musically embodies the many different moods found around the Bodensee (Lake Constance) - cheerfulness and melancholy, departures and longing, calm and agitation. The roles of the soloist and the accompaniment were consciously crafted in away that does not follow the usual conventions of the genre.

Armin Schaer, die op zoek was naar een nieuwe compositie voor de tuba, vroeg de componist dit werk voor hem te schrijven. Om precies te zijn: hij verzocht hem een werk te creëren dat de veelzijdigheid van dit schitterende instrumentvoor het voetlicht zou brengen - in een verfrissende moderne muziekstijl. Met deze aanwijzingen in het achterhoofd schreef Thomas Doss een werk met ruimte voor stilistische sprongen: het is vrolijk, spannend, romantisch en virtuoos,maar er blijft steeds een rode draad aanwezig die de openingsmaten aan de laatste verbindt.Panoptikum is een muzikale belichaming van de vele verschillende stemmingen rondom de Bodensee (Lake Constance) - vreugde en melancholie,afscheid en verlangen, kalmte en onrust. De rollen van de solist en de begeleiding volgen bewust niet de gebruikelijke conventies van het genre. Het werk straalt emotie uit, spreekt een breed publiek aan en overtuigt deluisteraars van de kracht van de tuba als solo-instrument.

PANOPTIKUM erlaubt stilistische Sprünge, ist romantisch, spannend und virtuos, hat abertrotzdem einen roten Faden, der es dramaturgisch zusammenhält. Thematisch stellt es die vielfältigen Stimmungen des Bodensees dar.

Armin Schaer a commandé cette œuvre alors qu’il était la recherche d’une nouvelle pièce pour tuba. Il insista sur le fait que la composition devait souligner la versatilité de ce merveilleux instrument. Le style devait être frais et moderne. Entenant compte de tous ces éléments, Thomas Doss a créé une œuvre permettant des sauts stylistiques dans un contexte plaisant, passionnant, romantique et virtuose, sans perdre de vue le fil conducteur qui mène l’œuvre de la première la dernièremesure.

PANOPTIKUM (Panoptique) fait ressortir les nombreuses différentes atmosphères qui règnent autour du lac de Constance : la gaieté et la mélancolie, les départs et le désir impatient de revenir, le calme et l’agitation. Les rôles du soliste et del’accompagnement s’affranchissent volontairement des conventions usuelles du genre. La musique suffit susciter des émotions, toucher un large public et le convaincre que le tuba peut être un instrument solo part entière.

Armin Schaer commissioned this work in his search for a new piece for the tuba. More specifically, he wanted a work that showed off the versatility of this splendid instrument, written in a musical style that is both fresh and modern. Taking all these specifications into account, Thomas Doss created a work that allows stylistic leaps and is fun, exciting, romantic, and virtuosic, but does not lose sight of the thread that connects the opening measures to the very last.Panoptikum musically embodies the many different moods found around the Bodensee (Lake Constance) - cheerfulness and melancholy, break-up and longing, calm and agitation. The roles of the soloist and theaccompaniment were consciously crafted in a way that does not follow the conventions of the genre.
