Movement I begins in a pensive mood using stark, bare interconnecting melodic lines which occasionally coalesce to form a harmonic high points. Movement II starts out with a ground bass which states the melody, which then is transformed into several joyful variations. Movement III is a wistful setting of JOHNNY HAS GONE FOR A SOLDIER, a song from the revolutionary war era. The piece was written for harpist Elaine Christy of Princeton University. The Princeton area saw a decisive battle during the revolution, therefore the use of JOHNNY HAS GONE FOR A SOLDIER. Grade Level 6. There are no pedal markings so that the player can mark-up the part as they see fit.
