Composed by Benedetto Pallavicino. Arranged by William Combs. Renaissance Venician. Score and parts. Cherry Classics #CC3325. Published by Cherry Classics (CY.CC3325).

O sacrum convivium (pub. 1605) is a sacred motet written by Benedetto Pallavicino for two antiphonal vocal ensembles (ATTB TTTB) with lyrics attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas. Written in Venetian polychoral style, this piece uses terraced dynamics, duple/triple meter changes, homophonic, and imitative polyphonic textures. This arrangement by Dr. William Combs sets the piece as two trombone ensembles with the same voicing as the original.

The highest part in the first ensemble is written for alto trombone but could also be played on tenor trombone by a strong player (B-flat 3 – D5). Clefs used in this arrangement are ATBB TBBB.

The imitative polyphony throughout the piece creates a dense, interlocking rhythmic texture that is useful for teaching and reinforcing ensemble rhythmic integrity when performed with a student ensemble. For moderately advanced performers.
