Composed by Giovanni Gabrieli. Arranged by Yves Bouillot. Religious,Renaissance. 25 pages. Yves Bouillot #757255. Published by Yves Bouillot (A0.1156911).

Gabrieli's version constantly and classically balances two contrasting vocal choirs while maintaining its elegant proportions. Gabrieli divides his text into three unequal parts; each receives a musical section of roughly equal length. The opening phrase is sung three times: once by the first choir, once by the slightly lower second choir, and a third time in full climactic polyphony. The second phrase of the text takes up the same tripartite structure, with a temporal enlargement in triple rhythmic groups. The composer packs the most text into the third section. The radiant conclusion of his motet comes in a fourth section, a long, jubilant “hallelujah”. A series of three-meter syncopated antiphonal statements gradually give way to a broad eight-voice tutti. Whether the two choirs braved the logistical challenges of physical separation or simply sang in close alternation, the effect added great sparkle to the Venetian liturgy.
