Written on an afternoon in December 1992 at the request of Canadian pianist
Barbara Pritchard to become part of her "Variations" cycle of piano
commissions, the music was inspired by a fragment of text from Maggie Helwig’s
poem "The Other Goldberg Variations", The ghost of Beethoven appears in this
one-minute work that features use of the middle pedal and a special resonance
effect.
