It can be played either with the left hand alone or with both hands, but the fingering reflects left hand only. If you have ever seen a display of the northern lights, you know how awe-inspiring they can be. In this piece, I recall from my childhood seeing a Roman candle-like episode of brilliant sparkling light shooting up into the night sky. The opening theme is reminiscent of this glorious beauty. It is echoed in the second theme, a series of beautiful and carefully organized arpeggios, carefully notated fingering to achieve them smoothly. A melody is discovered with accents to bring it out, through the undulating patterns. This piece is a great way to keep your injured student engaged and learning!
