Composed by Gerhard Guter. Score and set of parts. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.51965).A convergence of swing and bolero styles, this composition was originally written for a small jazz group and more recently adapted for the California State University Long Beach Studio Jazz Band. The harmony and voicings bear some (intentional) harmonic resemblance to Oliver Nelson's classic "Stolen Moments" from his landmark 1961 album Blues and the Abstract Truth. The "Train" reference in the title owes itself to a melodic quotation of the John Coltrane composition "Naima," which occurs during the bridge section. A rhythmic "hook" figure plays an important role in connecting thematic material. Listen for the guitar and vibraphone pairing during background figures - a device commonly used in a similar manner by the late Henry Mancini. Soloists: tenor sax 1 and piano. trumpet range: D6. 5/5/5/G/P/B/D/ percussion.
