"Meu Imortal" was composed by Ben Moody, former guitarist of the band. Subsequently, a bridge written by Amy Lee, vocalist and pianist of Evanescence, was also added to the song, which had its production signed by Dave Fortman.

The song is a melancholic rock in slow rhythm, with 80 beats per minute, and is basically all focused on the piano and Amy's voice, even when an explosive break brings guitars and strong drums and makes the single much more like Evanescence. .
Several theories revolve around the lyrics for "My Immortal". Some say that Ben Moody, who is no longer part of the band, was inspired by the death of his grandfather, Bill Holcomb, to compose the song. According to Ben, the song speaks of a spirit that does not accept death and that is why it stays around, making you wish with all your options that it will go away forever.
