When commissioning the work. Shannon requested a work that had some ties to Kansas City. For me, Kansas City is known for two things: BBQ Sauce and Jazz. Not having any idea how to incorporate BBQ Sauce into my composition, I set about composing a work with jazz ties. "MO" makes use of such diverse inspirations at Luciano Berio, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane and the "Missouri Waltz". "MO" is the U.S. postal Service official abbreviation for the state of Missouri.
