The Eccentric Mass is a brand new composing for mixed a capella choir completed in 2014. It is built on the basis of a missa brevis. It is dedicated to Lord Eugene Martin, the grandfather of the composer. It was performed for the first time on November 2014, 15th, on the very anniversary of birth of the aforesaid grandfather. He died in 2008.
The Eccentric Mass is divided in 7 parts, including the basic latin Catholic liturgy, although the composer is Protestant. It also includes some psalms and English speaking poems.
Confidentiality and inner self is the general mood of the masterpiece. Therefore, the appropriate number of singers to perform it is about 16 - meaning 4 singers by section. However, it can be performed by a choir of up to 32 singers.
The Eccentric Mass would be called so because of the approximate use of latin language, always on purpose. He is using the text only as an alibi for the music. For example, the Credo, which used to be the longest text in the latin Catholic liturgy, is sharply cut in the Eccentric Mass and replaced with an extract from the psalm 103, in English.
The second eccentricity would be in the mingling of languages, latin and English. This is not new, for some composers already proceeded that way. What could be new is the mingling of sacred scripts and secular ones, especially with the use of a poem from Emily Dickinson.
Finally, the 7 parts of the Eccentric Mass are deliberately combining different styles. However, it never brushes nor crosses the line into grossness. This combination is never causing detriment to the spirit of the scripts it is supposed to bring out.
