Born in Cremona in 1567, Claudio Monteverdi is the pupil of one of the best masters of music of this period, Marc Antonio Ingegneri (1535-1592), who taught him the use of organo and viola da gamba, and also counterpoint and musical writing. Though he has composed all his carreer sacred music works, it waits until the years 1640-1641 for a major collection to be published with this type of compositions : la Selva Morale e spirituale. It includes about 40 works written during 50 years among which 3 mass, including the present Missa a quattro voci.
