Mastering all 12 Major Scales

This presentation will help you understand and master the performance of all 12 major scales at the highest level of universal conservatory standards.

Major scales are so essential to music that they must be "mastered", not merely played or read.  Your understanding of the major scales must be deeper than merely reading or even memorizing them from a book.

This presentation grew out of the idea that traditional major scales presentations are hiding the true nature of major scales for the piano.  When trying to understand the fingering principles for major scales, traditional presentations (Hanon, etc) offer one solution for the sharp keys (1 2 3 - 1 2 3 4) along with utter chaos for the flat key scales.  There is seemingly no rhyme or reason for remembering the flat key fingerings according to traditional presentations.

This presentation is revolutionary in its revelation that there is only one RH fingering for ALL 12 MAJOR SCALES, and it is the one that you already know:  1 2 3 - 1 2 3 4.

For the LH, the same is true:  All 12 Major scales are best played with the same LH fingering, and it is also one you already know:  4 3 2 1 - 4 3 2 1.  You will see that for the flat keys, as well as B major, this is already universally agreed upon.

The LH sharp key fingerings, and also C major, are best played with this same fingering, making it the universal LH fingering.  This is accomplished by recognizing these keys as modes of B, in the same way that flat keys are understood as modes of C.

Convention has established the LH starting with the 5th finger for the key of C and the sharp keys.  For this reason alone--convention and tradition, we will tolerate that there are two LH fingerings for major scales.

In the future, the most enlightened presentations of major scales will utilize this revolutionary perspective of major scales as modes of B and C for the sharp and flat keys respectively, which reveals one universal fingering for all 12 scales.  One of the many profound consequences of this approach is that the relationship between LH and RH is constant for all 12 scales, as the performer learns and performs both hands together.
