Burks (A0.902506)."Lonely Hearts" is a great piece for talent shows, and for voice study in K-12, college, and private studios, because of its melismas, advanced rhythmic figures, and feeling. The vocal tessitura is soprano 2/alto. The form follows the recording exactly. "Lonely Hearts" is generally appropriate for high school students and older; there is an expletive that occurs in measures 10 and 28 that is easily replaceable (e.g."mess me up"). The best way to practice this piece is by listening to JoJo’s recording while reading the score. R&B is a style of African American music that tends to be heavily ornamented (grace notes, pitch bends, "blue notes," etc.), so some elements of JoJo's performance are best absorbed by the ear.
