Composed by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). Arranged by James Pybus. 20th Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 51 pages. James Pybus #50435. Published by James Pybus (A0.764664).

Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite originally for solo piano composed between 1914 and 1917. Each of its six movements is dedicated to the memory of friends of the composer who had died fighting in World War 1. Ravel himself was an army driver during the war. The title may suggest what is seen and felt in a visit to the tomb of Couperin, however "tombeau" is actually a musical term popular in the 17th century meaning "a piece written as a memorial." In 1919 Ravel created an orchestrated version of four of the movements; it is one of his most popular works. This arrangement (part 1 of Ravel's six-movement suite) for SATB Saxophone Quartet consists of the Prelude, Menuet and Rigaudon. Part 2 is available on SMP Press under separate cover and consists of the Fugue, Forlane and Toccata. This challenging work is an excellent showpiece for Saxophone Quartet and will enhance a variety of concert and performance settings.
