About the music

Bassoon players: This one's for you.

Lament
is the tenth track in my modern, contemporary classical crossover, concept album, The Hunt. The Hunt is the hunt of life, hunting for health, for life, for happiness, for love, for ideas, for creativity, for success. Lament expresses the feelings of loss and the hope that comes when one overcomes that loss or failure. Its march leads you through the pain, but mostly, above it.

From the album booklet:

"Where did you go? You were here but a minute ago,
full of spit and polish, full of life and jolly.
Where did you go? The ferryman you didn't owe
for us to give you coin to meet him.
Must a win be forever accompanied by loss?
Can we cherish happiness without the cross?

I am filled with despair, but this anguish
I must accept, for it was no surprise this day
would come. I must be careful not to come undone.
I march solemnly in your honor and will forever
carry your banner, for you will not be forgotten.

Life is death and death is life. In its end,
we find its beginning. (5:39)."

The music is 5 minutes and 39 seconds

About the Score

Lament is music for an orchestra or for a specific group of players. Bassoon players, this one's for you. Its march is both sad and hopeful. The piece includes bassoon, contrabassoon, cello, timpani, finger cymbals, sleigh bells, & castañets, but I can imagine it can work adapted in a number of ways by different groups or a very advanced group of students. It'll be fun to hear how others interpret it.
