Kyoto Dreams Five Japanese songs for mezzo-soprano and Piano
These five short songs are beautiful settings of medieval Japanese poems of love and longing. They were first performed in Thailand by the well-known Thai counter-tenor Jak Cholvijarn. The songs would make a fine additional to a vocal recital and are intended for a reasonably accomplished singer. Of course, the range of the songs is also suitable for counter-tenor. The songs are entitled:
(1) Never seeing you (words by Sakanoue Korenori, late 10th century) (2) Alone (words by Ariwara no Yukihira, 818-893) (3) The time will come (words by Otomo no Yakamochi, 718-785) (4) At sunset (words 7th century anonymous) (5) What I would give (12th century anonymous)
The audio sample contains numbers 1, 3 and 5 and the voice part is performed on the oboe. All the songs are presented in a single 19-page book. The music has been scanned at 1,200 dpi which produces a professional quality copies.
