This work for flute and string trio was composed in 2009. The title, Corollaries, concerns the philosophy of Kant and Oppenheimer, and refers to statements, which lead on automatically from previously stated material. In the world of mathematics, a corollary is something which leads directly from a theory. This suggests, then, a method of musical construction where each idea flows from the previous one, similar to Lutoslawski's chain methods. The opening statement of the piece is a dramatic unison chord, which serves as the foundation for the whole piece, as the music gradually develops from this gesture. This is a relatively slow paced piece, which contains microtones and some interesting timbral effects. The music is intense but not impossibly difficult, and has some well-crafted compositional textures and interesting harmonies. Well worth exploring for those with an interest in contemporary repertoire. (Carla Rees, FLUTE MAGAZINE - September 2011).
