Joy To The World by Lowell Mason Concert Band - Digital Sheet Music

By Lowell Mason

Joy to the World" was the most-published Christmas hymn in North America. The song was first published in 1719 by Isaac Watts in his collection of the Psalms of David. The tune is from an 1848 edition by Lowell Mason, an accomplished and well-known composer and arranger, for The National Psalmist which he attributes to George Frideric Handel. It was published under the name of Antioch at that time. There has long been speculation over how much a part Handel's Messiah had in "Joy to the World". Musically, the first four notes are the same as the first four in the chorus "Lift up your heads" from Handel's Messiah. Mason was an admirer of Handel's music and had in fact became president of the Boston Handel and Haydn Society in 1827.This arrangement for Concert Band covers almost any holiday concert season. Well known by audiences and immediately recognizable, this contemporary arrangement adds a modern setting to this most popular tune that audiences will enjoy.
