Synopsis:
Sarah Worth, a born-and-bred Boston North Shore WASP, has left her doctor husband to join the Arizona ashram of a Hindu spiritual leader known as the Arhat. Working on the ashram as a humble “sannysin,” or disciple, she has formed a friendship with a fellow sannysin named Alinga, who has been following the Arhat since he was in India. Back in Marblehead, Sarah’s abandoned husband Charles has been working with his lawyer Gilman to get Sarah back.
In this scene, Charles and Gilman are drinking while Charles is pouring out his sorrow and incomprehension of Sarah’s leaving him. Sure, he has had other women, but purely for recreation, never for love, so it shouldn’t have mattered. The scene becomes a split scene as Sarah and Alinga enter, having become lovers. At the end of the scene Gilman breaks this news to an unbelieving Charles.
