Industrial chains is a powerful symphonic depiction of the rapidly industrializing world, mimicking the sounds and aesthetics of mid-19th century technology and mechanization. The score achieves this by utilizing snare drums to mimic the progressively increasing chugging of train tracks, mallets and tubular bells to replicate locomotives, woodwind flourishes to evoke steam escaping from machines, among other effects. The piece immerses the audience in a new world where the relentless march of progress is ever-present. The brass fanfare and melody, which follow the slow-burning ignition of an era of technology, symbolize industrial dominance, while the solemn, melancholic, and dark English horn and French horn duets and solos reflect the humanity caught in its wake. The voices of these instruments are followed by a beautiful piano and wind feature, which symbolizes hope amidst the despair of working in someone else’s vast machine.
