Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Michael R. Kearney. 20th Century. Score. 18 pages. Homestead Press #4846935. Published by Homestead Press (A0.914822).

This transcription of "Jupiter" arose from a practical need. The existing organ
transcriptions of Holst’s famous work assume the existence of modern
instruments with vast tonal resources and memory banks at their disposal. This
arrangement is for the Other Ones-the much less perfect organs with whose
limited registers, faulty combination actions, and untuned or untunable ranks
the ordinary organist copes on a weekly basis.

Envisioned in this transcription is a medium-sized three-manual instrument
comprising an enclosed Swell with 8-foot and 4-foot reeds, an unenclosed Great
with something approximating an 8-foot festival trumpet, a Positiv in the
Baroque style, and a Pedal of 16- and 8-foot stops with appropriate couplers.
But the transcription will work on larger as well as slightly smaller instruments;
the general registration suggestions provide freedom for the organist to adapt
to the specific capabilities of an instrument. Where the tone color changes, one
of the hands will often drop out for a few measures in order to facilitate manual
stop adjustments if necessary.

These principles are intended to provide a suitable diversity of voices and
timbres to allow the organist to produce an artistic rendering worthy of Holst
while working within the limitations of less-than-perfect instruments. Of
course, the performer will also benefit from careful study of the
instrumentation in the original orchestral score.
