William Wordsworth places this poem in the middle of London during the height of the Industrial Revolution. The air would have been far from smokeless, the beauty very much in the eye of the beholder. And that is the point of the poem which the composer illuminates with his transcendent music: that it is up to us to see beauty wherever we can. Lush choral writing, multiple divisi, and the lack of an accompaniment make this a fine piece for an accomplished choral ensemble.
