Originally conceived as a work for the renaissance ensemble Calliope, composer Hugh Aitken's string orchestra setting of this work explores the confluence of Burgundian renaissance polyphony and modern compositional technique. Quotations from Johannes Ockeghem's sacred and secular works are surreptitiously interspersed in a fascinating web of highly independent contrapuntal lines, polyrhythms and polymeters, and tonal exploration. With the exception of the ethereal harmonics of the closing phrases, the work explores the multiple-divisi sonority of the lower string orchestra tessitura, rarely venturing to pitches above the treble clef. A challenging but highly rewarding addition to the string orchestra repertoire. Duration: 13:00

Includes String Orchestra Score and parts (88664).
