"Impromptu No. 2 for Trombone and Piano" is the second in a set of one-movement solo trombone works from American composer P. F. Strohm, written in a manner suggestive of improvisation and showcasing different musical styles. These impromptus emphasize tone, technique and musicality for both performers. They are outstanding works for contest, concert or recital, either individually or as a set. In the second impromptu, both instruments explore impressionistic harmonies and melodies, with each instrument seemingly free to paint sounds on their own, yet always perfectly complementing each other. The effect is often more akin to a smoky jazz ballad than a piece of chamber music. The work begins, develops and ends on constantly shifting musical ground, always questioning, but never resolving. Difficulty level is medium-advanced. Performance time is 5:30. Member, ASCAP.
