It was a fine edition, a critical edition, however, it was no different from another Ricordi critical edition which was 100 pages shorter than this one. One does NOT find in this edition all the changes Verdi made for the French version of the opera (huge changed with a ballet, a completely different ending, and many changes in the vocal lines). I already had the other edition (which is by the same editor), but seeing this one had 100 pages more figured it would have had all the various changes Verdi had written for the opera at various times. I was wrong. All it contained extra was a lengthy introduction/history, with some explanations of various differences between sources (such essays are now becoming boring as with Verdi, no alteration in music are contained as with other composers). It seems buying critical editions of Verdi advances your understanding of the music very little. The standard tried and true editions one has always been able to buy (and far cheaper) are good enough when it comes to Verdi's operas. I haven't bought the Critical edition of La Traviata, which supposedly was really reworked, but something tells me one won't really learn much about its original version. Of course, it is well bound, and beautifully printed.
